Before I start my review, I just need to say how moving I found Jo Bartlett’s letter to us readers, at the start of this book; a real testament to her friendship.

I was utterly thrilled to be gifted the opportunity to review the latest book in the Cornish Midwife series, as I have so enjoyed its predecessors. I love Jo Bartlett’s gift for creating likeable, cohesive characters and unique stories for them. It was such a treat to catch up with some of my favourite characters from previous books in the series, like Gwen and Bobby and the new additions fitted perfectly, like matching cups in a tea set.

Ella is the most wonderful, selfless character, and one couldn’t help but want everything to go her way. It was so heartwarming, the way that she put everyone else before herself, although she might have considered the old adages about looking after oneself above others.

Ella’s news was devastating, but as a reader I couldn’t help but think of the parallel situation with Jemina and Leo. Ella seemed in almost complete denial of her diagnosis, as much as Dan fussed; could they learn anything from their friends?

I confess to different emotions reading this book – both sad and happy tears. I was just so desperate for a positive outcome for Ella and Dan. Along the way I throughly enjoyed the midwives stories both on and off the job and the stories were so real, I found myself totally immersed in what was happening.

I think that the realism is what really makes these books matter; Jo Bartlett shows that she is not afraid to broach any topic, and the sad, gritty themes are dealt with such total empathy. She is truly a gifted writer, and I am happy to be on the receiving end of this exceptional gift!

Please join me in enjoying this book and finding out what happens for yourself, while we look forward to the next episode in the series.
